Why Choose Our Sweet Pea Flower Seeds?

Sweet pea seeds are all about colour. Picture deep, rich purples blending into soft lavenders and bold, ruby reds that really pop. You’ll also find creamy whites and soft pinks if you prefer a softer cottage garden look. Or, what about Singing the Blues: rich and deep blues mixed and swirled with serene pastels. And that’s not to mention the delicate ruffle of the petals or their sweet scent.

When to Sow Sweet Pea Seeds

The tradition is that you should sow sweet pea seeds on the eve of St Patrick’s Day in March. Sweet peas don’t mind cool weather; when you plant them in autumn, it gives them plenty of time to bed in and grow before they flower in winter. In warmer parts of the country like Brisbane, your sweet peas might do better sown in April or May instead.

How to Grow Sweet Pea Seeds

To sow sweet pea seeds, water the soil and dig a shallow trench. Place the seeds about 3cm (1in) apart and gently press them in. Sweet peas don’t like their roots to stay too wet, so avoid soaking the seeds before planting. If the weather is particularly wet, consider sowing in Jiffy Peat Pellets to reduce the risk of rotting. Sweet peas prefer slightly alkaline soil with a pH of 7-8, so you might need to add some garden lime, along with good compost and slow-release fertiliser.

Sweet peas are vining plants, so support them as they grow with a trellis, mesh, twine, or a fence. Keep the soil moist but not soggy to help them thrive. Pinch back its tips when they reach 30cm (12”) to stop them getting too leggy.
