When to Sow Autumn-Sowing Flower Seeds
Depending on your region's climate, autumn flower seeds are best sown from late summer to mid-autumn. Sowing in early autumn in warmer areas allows the seeds to establish before winter sets in. In cooler climates, sowing in the summer can give the seeds a little extra warmth and a little extra time to grow before the cold weather sets in. You can also sow indoors in trays if frost is a concern, transplanting seedlings once conditions improve.
How to Grow Autumn-Sowing Flower Seeds
Sow autumn-sowing flower seeds in a well-prepared, moist, but well-drained garden bed. Scatter the seeds evenly and lightly cover them with 5mm (1/4in) of soil. Firm the soil gently and keep it moist as the seedlings sprout. Thin the seedlings to allow space for growth once they reach around 5cm (2in) tall, so that the biggest, strongest flowers survive. Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging the soil, until the plants are well-established. Some varieties may have specific requirements, so always check individual instructions on the back of your seed packet.
For cut flowers, regularly deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers throughout the season. Harvest flowers early in the morning when they are full of water and just before the blooms open for increased vase life.
