What Bulbs to Sow in Autumn (Australia)

Autumn planting bulbs, including ranunculus, freesias, jonquils, anemones, tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, should be planted from mid-March to May, depending on your region. These bulbs do well if they get time to develop before winter sets in, so aim to plant them around six weeks before the ground freezes.

How to Grow Autumn Planting Bulbs

Plant your bulbs at a depth of around twice their width, with the pointed end facing up (with the exception of ranunculus, which likes to be planted claw down). Space them according to the variety; larger bulbs like daffodils need more room, while smaller ones like crocuses can be planted closer together. Choose well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot, as waterlogged conditions can cause bulbs to rot. If you’re planting them as container garden, use a free-draining bulb compost and follow the same planting depth and spacing guidelines. Water the bulbs in well after planting and then leave them undisturbed to develop roots over winter.
