When to Sow Strawberry Seeds
The best time to plant your strawberry seeds is in the spring or autumn.
Strawberry seeds are best sown in early spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and conditions are just right for the seeds to germinate. That means planting in March-April or September-October for most regions. This timing gives your strawberries the best chance to set down strong roots before the extremes of summer or winter set in.
For regions with cooler climates, sow seeds indoors earlier to give them a head start. If you're in a warmer area, autumn planting can yield great results. Always check your local conditions and aim to sow when the soil is warm but not overly hot.
How to Grow Strawberry Seeds (Australia)
To grow strawberries from seed, stratify them first; that means keeping them in the fridge for a few weeks. This helps them germinate.
Sprinkle them lightly on the surface of fine grade seed-raising mix and cover with a 1-2mm layer of soil or vermiculite. Keep the mix moist but not waterlogged. Place the pots in a warm, bright location, but avoid direct sunlight. When they germinate after 2-4 weeks, move to a cooler spot with indirect light instead.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into well-drained soil. Space them 30cm (12in) apart and water regularly. You’ll know your strawberries are ripe for the picking when they’re a deep red, and slightly soft to the touch.
