When to Sow Swede Seeds
Swedes grow best in the cooler months, so sow swede seeds from late summer to early autumn (or, in tropical areas, mid-autumn). Alternatively, you can start them indoors before transplanting them, which typically takes 3-6 weeks. They are ready when they have developed a few sets of true leaves but no main tap root. Bear in mind that even though they prefer the cold, they must be hardened off before being planted outdoors.
How to Grow Swedes from Seed
Sow your Swede seeds in loosened, enriched, well-drained soil about 1cm (1/2in) deep in a furrow. Lightly cover them with soil and gently water them to help them settle in. Swedes can be grown either in trays, in your garden soil, or as container garden seeds. Once seedlings emerge, thin them out to leave 15-20cm (6-8in) between each plant, and transplant any excess seedlings to other parts of the garden. Swedes benefit from regular watering, regular watering, and light feeding for best results.
Harvest your Swedes from early autumn onwards when the roots reach a good size. Alternatively, leave them in the ground into winter or even early spring, lifting them when you need them.
