When to Sow Parsnip Seeds
Parsnips can be sown throughout most of the year, apart from the hottest and coldest months. You can first plant them in August or early September as the soil starts to warm up. Parsnips need a long growing season, so the earlier you sow them, the better the results. Unlike many vegetables, root vegetables such as parsnips are easily damaged by being grown indoors and transplanted outdoors, so it is advised to directly sow your seeds in their final growing position.
How to Grow Parsnips from Seed
Plant your parsnip seeds around 1cm (1/2in) deep in rows spaced about 30cm (12in) apart. Once sown, cover them lightly with soil and keep the soil moist but not soggy. As the seedlings grow, thin them out to give the remaining plants room to spread and develop their large, sweet roots. Water them and keep their growing area weed-free. Start lifting when the foliage starts to die down and use a fork to lift them carefully.
