When to Sow Radish Seeds
Radish seeds should be sown in either autumn or spring, but can be grown year round depending on the climate. The ideal temperature for sowing is between 10°C and 20°C. In cooler climates, spring is the best time to plant, while in warmer regions, autumn is better. Avoid sowing radish seeds in extreme heat at any time of year.
How to Grow Radish Seeds
Radishes are quick and easy to grow, so don't be put off if you're a gardening beginner.
Sow the seeds thinly in autumn or spring, about 6mm (1/4in) deep, in rows 25cm (10in) apart. Once the second leaf has appeared, thin the seedlings out to 3-5cm (1-2in) apart. Keep thinning every couple of weeks to give the plants room to grow strong and healthy roots. Radishes hate drying out, because they turn tough and bitter, so keep the soil moist.
Radishes are ready to harvest in just 4-6 weeks. Pull them from the soil when they’re firm and brightly coloured, and be sure not to leave them too long, or they may become woody. For a continuous supply, sow more seeds every few weeks.
