Starting Seeds in a Jiffy: How to Grow Seeds in Jiffy Pots

Jiffy propagation Products

When you use Jiffy® pellets and pots, you get happy, healthy, and strong plants, which is why we stock Jiffy propagation equipment at Mr Fothergill’s! In this article, we’ll explore some of the benefits of using Jiffy products as well as answer key questions like how to start growing a seed and how to use Jiffy pots and peat pellets.

Why Use Jiffy Pots and Pellets?

Here are just a few reasons why thousands of commercial growers and home gardeners the world over love Jiffy.

Strong, Healthy Roots that Make Strong, Healthy Plants

By using Jiffy pots or Jiffy pellets you're setting your plants up for success. Unlike plastic pots with a solid wall that restricts roots, Jiffy is permeable so your plants can grow through the wall developing stronger "free" roots.

This allows your seedlings to maximise nutrient and water intake as soon as they are transplanted into their final growing position. The texture of the soil is also much finer than potting soil, making it easier for seedlings to establish their root system.

A Head Start on the Growing Season

An early start means an extended harvest and Jiffy is the perfect way to get ahead of the planting season. Start your seeds indoors using a Jiffy reusable greenhouse and then transplant them into the garden when the weather is suitable. You don’t have to worry about space when it comes to succession planting, either, because Jiffy pots are small in size.

They’re Safe for Children

All Jiffy products are heat-treated and free from harmful micro-organisms making them particularly suited for gardening-loving kids and people with allergies.

No Mess or Fuss

Forget the hassle of mucking around with heavy bags of soil because Jiffy is lightweight and easy to store until needed. Jiffy soil pellets are also compressed so take up a fraction of the space of the equivalent seed-raising mix. Simply rehydrate with water to get sowing and when it's time to transplant, plant them out pot and all!

Superior Water Retention

With pellets made from peat or coir, Jiffy pellets offer a superior water retention capacity compared to potting soil. Peat is also full of nutrients making it the perfect seed-raising medium.

100% biodegradable

Jiffy coir pots and peat pots are both 100% biodegradable and organic, which helps you grow your favourite vegetables and flowers without worrying about your impact on the environment.

How to Grow Seeds in Jiffy Pots

Growing seeds in Jiffy pots is incredibly simple. All you do is add, sow your seeds, and water thoroughly. Then once your seedlings are ready to transplant, plant the complete pot and plant into its final growing position to eliminate transplant shock and avoid disturbing the plant’s fragile root system, and that’s it!

How to Use Jiffy Pellets

Jiffy pellets are either made of compressed peat or coir pith and wood pulp, that expand with water to provide ideal growing environments for seeds. Essentially, the pellet acts as the pot and soil, and they’re used in Jiffy greenhouses or our propagation trays.

All it takes is four steps to use Jiffy pellets:

  1. Hydrate your pellet using water.
  2. Plant the seed and cover it lightly.
  3. Grow seedlings to a suitable size.
  4. Plant the pellet and all in the garden.

The Jiffy netted pellets act as a pot and soil all in one, so simply add water and they will expand to seven times their size. The netting also holds the soil like a pot but is still permeable allowing roots to grow freely.

How to Use Jiffy Pots

Jiffy pots are just as easy to use as their pellets and all you have to do is follow four simple steps.

  1. Fill the pot with your seed-raising mix.
  2. Plant the seed and cover it lightly.
  3. Water thoroughly and leave it to grow
  4. Plant the pot and all in the garden.

And you’re good to go!
