Saffron Crocus Bulbs

Frequently Bought Together
Product Description
The Saffron Crocus is a true gem of the gardening world, combining rare beauty with practicality. Its soft purple flowers open in autumn, revealing vivid crimson stigmas—the source of saffron, the world’s most valuable spice. Each flower produces just three stigmas, which must be carefully hand-picked and dried, making saffron precious as well as delicious.
Highly prized in gourmet kitchens, saffron lends its rich aroma, flavour, and brilliant colour to dishes like creamy risottos and fragrant curries. Even if you don’t harvest the spice, the Saffron Crocus offers delicate blooms that bring a sense of refinement to any garden bed, container, or patio display.
This extraordinary crocus bulb thrives in sunny, well-drained locations, making it ideal for Mediterranean-style gardens or borders with good drainage. Pair your Saffron Crocus with spring flowering bulbs to create year-round interest. Or, if it’s only the saffron spice you’re growing them for, grow them alongside our herb seeds instead. Saffron Crocus bulbs should be planted in late summer in temperate or Mediterranean zones; tropical zones are unsuitable. Select a well-drained garden bed that receives full sun. Plant in fresh, unused soil with good drainage; fertilise at least 10 weeks before planting, and keep free from weeds before and after planting. Loosen the soil and plant the bulbs 10-15cm (4-6 in) deep, spacing them 15cm (6 in) apart. The bulbs will be dormant when first planted, so there is no need to water straightaway; wait until they form roots and sprouts instead. The same applies to feeding.
Harvest the delicate red saffron threads from the flowers once they bloom, usually in autumn. Be gentle when picking the threads, as they are fragile! It takes several flowers to produce just a small amount of saffron, so plan to harvest from multiple plants for a significant yield.
