Kale Nero di Toscana Seeds
Bring a taste of Italy to your garden with our Kale Nero di Toscana seeds. This much-loved heirloom vegetable variety, also known as Cavolo Nero or Black Cabbage, is an Italian classic that has been at the heart of traditional country cooking for generations.
Cavolo Nero is renowned for its unusually dark, wrinkled leaves, which are delicious raw in salads, sautéed with garlic and olive oil or added to hearty soups like ribollita. Its nutritional benefits are just as impressive: it’s packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron and calcium.
These resilient, easy-to-grow winter vegetable seeds perform well in Australian climates and can even tolerate light frost, which can sweeten their flavour. Harvest the leaves young for a tender texture or let them mature for more bite and a richer taste.

How To Grow
Sow Kale Nero di Toscana seeds thinly but firmly, 6mm (¼ in) deep, planting in rows 45cm (18 in) apart. Kale seedlings typically emerge within 7-10 days. Once the seedlings reach about 10cm (4 in) tall, thin them out to 45cm (18 in) apart to provide proper air circulation and space for the plants to grow.
To encourage the development of side shoots, cut the crown of the plant off at ground level once it has reached a sufficient size. Regular harvesting will encourage further growth; harvest the outer leaves first, leaving some green growth in the centre.
