Sow RHS Matrix Spring Onion seeds 6mm (1/4in) deep in rows 15cm (6in) apart. Cover with a fine layer of soil and firm gently. Keep the soil moist to encourage germination, which should take around 10-14 days. Once the seedlings emerge, they should not require thinning. Keep the plants well-watered, especially during dry periods. Harvest your RHS Matrix Spring Onion seeds when the bulbs are large enough to use – usually around 12-16 weeks after sowing, or when they reach the desired size for your recipes. Make successive sowings every 4-6 weeks for a continuous harvest.
