Wildflower Seed Starter Granules
Since many Australian native species have evolved over time to deal with a regular fire regime, they have developed a reliance on some of the chemicals in smoke to germinate from seed. Convenient, effective, natural and safe, our Wildflower Seed Starter Granules improve the rate and vigour of native seed germination by providing the smoke in an easy to use form.
Simply sow the seeds as directed on the packet and lightly apply the granules over the top before the first watering. Then lightly water the granules to initiate germination. For seeds that require soaking in water before sowing, simply add the starter granules to the water with the seeds.
Wildflower Seed Starter Granules are recommended for use with most Wildflower seeds, they will not harm other varieties not requiring smoke treatment either. In fact smoke treatment can help produce stronger seedlings, helping to improve their survival rate after germination.
Approximately 1 teaspoon/5g of granules.
How To Grow
There are 2 methods of using the wildflower seed starter granules:
- When sowing seeds into soil, sow your seeds then sprinkle a pinch of granules onto the surface of the soil. Gently water the soil afterwards. Ongoing watering will help wash the granules into the soil.
- If you are stratifying/scarifying your seeds using water - add a pinch or 2 of granules to the hot water, add your seeds and allow them to soak for the suggested amount of time. Strain your seeds saving the smoky water, sow your seeds and use the strained water to gently water in the seeds.
There is no set quantity for how much seed starter to use per pot but we advise to use it sparingly. As a rough guide there are enough granules to cover approximately 10 to 20 Jiffy® pots. We suggest using a pinch per pot. Same for a cup of water when soaking. It only takes a small amount of active ingredient to start germination so you can try various amounts until you find what works best for you. Conversely, there are no negative effects to seeds if you accidentally add too much seed starter.
Once opened, store unused granules in their sachet in an airtight container at room temperature.
