Broccoli Spigariello (Leaf Broccoli)
Spigariello broccoli, or ‘Leaf Broccoli’, is a delicious and highly productive variety that’s grown for its tender leaves rather than traditional heads. With a slightly sweet flavour similar to but milder than kale, these broccoli seeds are perfect for home gardeners who love versatile greens.
This Southern Italian favourite thrives in sunny, well-draining soil and provides steady and reliable yields throughout the growing season. Simply pick the leaves as needed or harvest the whole plant for larger meals. Remove any flowering heads as they appear to extend the harvesting period. Spigariello broccoli seeds are easy to grow, incredibly productive, and thrive in Australian gardens, making them a good choice for gardeners of all experience levels.
Cook Spigariello broccoli leaves as you would spinach – lightly sautéed, steamed, or added to soups and pasta dishes for a tasty and nutrient-packed meal. Browse Mr Fothergill’s vegetable seeds to grow more Italian recipe classics, from tomato seeds to spinach seeds and herb seeds.

How To Grow
Sow Spigariello broccoli seeds from late summer to early winter, or in spring in cooler regions. Sow the seeds thinly but firmly, 5mm (¼ in) deep, in a well-prepared garden bed that has already been watered. Plant the seeds in rows 45cm (18 in) apart. Broccoli seedlings appear within 7-10 days.
Once the seedlings are about 10cm tall, thin them out to 30cm apart to allow adequate space for growth. Harvest your Spigariello broccoli 8-10 weeks after sowing. Spigariello broccoli thrives in cool, moist conditions and benefits from a regular watering schedule, especially during dry spells. It also responds well to a light application of organic or slow-release fertiliser during the growing season.
You can pick leaves as needed for ongoing harvests, or alternatively, harvest the entire plant once it has reached the desired size.
