Creating bird seed hangers is a fun activity to start at home. Not only does it attract fascinating, beneficial wildlife into your garden, but it can encourage your kids to get involved and create beautiful Christmas ornaments.
In this blog, we’ll explain how to make bird seed hangers, how to encourage wildlife into your garden, and what you’ll need to create beautiful and functional bird seed hangers in your own garden.
Why Encourage Wildlife in Your Garden?
Pollination Potential
Lots of birds are pollinators and as they move between trees, bushes, and plants, they can move pollen from one flower to another. This is crucial for the production of more seeds and fruit and even though bees get most of the credit as kings of the pollination world, birds play their part.
Pest Control
They’re also fantastic for handling pests in your garden and killing off mosquitos and other nasties your garden can do without.
Colour and Sound
Of course, there’s nothing quite like seeing beautiful birds in your garden, which is a huge benefit of encouraging them into yours. Adding colour and sound to your home, the many bird species in Australia create a relaxing atmosphere you can enjoy all day long.
Encourage Wildlife to Encourage Kids into Gardening
It’s often difficult to encourage children into gardening duties, but creating bird seed hangers is a great way to get them excited about getting their hands dirty. A brilliant arts and crafts style exercise to bring the family together, they’ll be more likely to stay engaged in the garden if they’ve created something that attracts wildlife into it.
As well as encouraging them to become gardeners themselves, they’ll also be encouraged to spend more time outdoors and understand the importance of nurturing outdoor spaces for the creatures that live there.
Ingredients for Bird Seed Hangers
To kickstart your bird seed hanger, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 3/4 cup plain flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 packet unflavoured gelatin (make to packet instructions)
- 3 tbsp rice syrup
- 4 cups birdseed
- Cookie cutters
- Straws
- Baking paper
- Ribbon/twine.
How to Make Bird Seed Hangers Step by Step
- Combine flour, water, gelatin and rice syrup and stir until well combined then add birdseed to the mixture, stirring until well coated.
- Place cookie cutters onto the baking paper and fill each one with the mixture. Smooth over the top with the back of a spoon and sit for 2-3 hours.
- Poke a hole through the top of each shape using a straw (not too close to the edge), making sure it goes all the way through.
- Once set, take the hangers out of the cutters and allow to dry for a few more hours or overnight.
- Cut ribbon to your desired length, thread through the hole in each, then hang on trees and wait for the birds to arrive!
