When to Sow Vegetable Seeds
When precisely you sow your vegetable seeds depends on what you’re planting. We stock spring planting seeds, summer planting seeds, autumn planting seeds and winter planting seeds–so your vegetable patch doesn’t ever have to be dormant.
Vegetables that are frost-hardy can be planted in the winter, but might not like hot summer sun. Vegetables that do best in summer typically die back if they’re outdoors in sub-zero temperatures. We recommend checking our blog for guides on seasonal veg, or at least the back of your seed packet for detailed and specific instructions.
How to Grow Vegetables from Seed
How you grow your vegetable seeds depends on the variety you’re growing, but generally speaking, sow the seeds in a good-quality seed raising mix at a depth about twice their thickness. Water them gently and keep the soil consistently moist until they sprout. This can be indoors in trays or outdoors in their final growing position depending on the variety.
If grown indoors, transplant them outside only once they’re established, leaving more room between plantings if the plants grow big. Use a light, natural fertiliser to give them a helping hand, water at the base to settle them in, and add mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds if necessary.
Check the seed packet or our blog for variety-specific instructions.
